Chair's Message

We are thrilled to bring you this special issue of the newsletter, devoted to the DH2026 conference. As you have hopefully already seen the Call for Proposals is open, and it will close in just under one month. The conference theme this year, “Engagement”, articulates two subthemes: “Translating | Translinguality in the Era of AI”, “Annotating | Beyond Patterns: Interpretation with Small Data”, and “Remembering | Digital Humanities and the Memory of the World”.

Please be aware that we updated our protocols beginning this year, and the CFP no longer includes panels. There is a technical track available as well, and the conference will be fully hybrid, so remote presentation is an option. Proposals are requested for submission in English, although you are welcome to present in the language of your choice, as the Local Organizers will introduce an (optional) AI-powered translator during conference presentations.

In preparation for the closing of the CFP, the Local Organizing Team and ADHO’s Conference Officer, Walter Schloger, have been working tirelessly in ConfTool to ensure that our reviewer pool is up to date and ready to do the essential and exciting work of reviewing submissions. Thanks to the team for modernizing the backend of ADHO’s ConfTool account and for opening up the Reviewer Sign Up process. If you are not yet a reviewer (or are unsure), please consider filling out the nomination form by December 5. Your contributions to the DH community through reviews are invaluable to developing scholarship across the field.

As you consider submitting and/or reviewing for the conference, take a look through its website and enjoy discovering information about the local arrangements. Thanks to the incredible work of the Local Organizers and the Program Committee!

Best,

Call for Reviewers

ADHO invites you to serve as a reviewer for the annual conference, DH2026: Engagement.

Reviewing is both a valuable and much appreciated service to the DH community and an important responsibility. Reviewers will be asked to complete a minimum of four reviews in any of the submission formats available for the conference. DH2026 will use the double-anonymous (double-blind) peer review process. Authors' and reviewers' identities will not be disclosed. All submissions and reviews are expected to be written in English.

Reviewers must meet two or more of the following criteria:

Be professionally associated (or recently associated) with an institutional DH program, project, or initiative;

Hold at least a Master’s degree or equivalent in a DH-related discipline (including, but not limited to, the Humanities, Social or Natural Sciences, Library and/or Information Sciences, Fine Arts, etc.);

Have presented at an ADHO-, CO/AO-, or SIG-organized conference, symposium, colloquium, or equivalent academic event;

Have published a DH-specific article or essay in a scholarly journal or volume (either print or electronic).

We would be delighted and grateful to have you join us as a reviewer for DH2026 by submitting your nomination using this Reviewer Nomination Form by December 5.

Conference Bursary Awards

Keep in mind that accepted submissions for the conference have the opportunity to be awarded a Conference Bursary Award, which supports early career scholars. Application for the Award does not open until after acceptances go out in the new year.

Awards are available for in-person presenters as well as remote presenters. For remote presenters, the Award covers the cost of registration. For in-person presenters, the award is given as reimbursement up to 550 EUR for travel and expenses, and inter-continental travel awardees have the opportunity to request up to 300 EUR additionally to defray some of the added costs of travel.

The Only Constant is Change: Current and Upcoming Modifications to ADHO’s Digital Humanities Conference

As we eagerly anticipate the opening of ADHO’s first in-person conference since 2019, we are also looking forward to the first opportunity since then for live conversations about the future of the conference. The COVID-19 pandemic brought about the largest disruption to everyday and academic life that most of us have ever experienced. During this period, we pivoted for DH2020 to an online conference, and deferred the 2021 conference to DH2022, which also had to be held online. We are grateful to all of those who worked to keep us connected by these and other means. The pandemic has created an opportunity for us all to reflect more intensively than in the past on the nature, impacts, and importance of academic conferences.

Yesterday, we published an update on ADHO’s ongoing work to improve the conference. We’ve already made modifications to the conference protocol, composition of the Conference Coordinating Committee, timing for selecting Program Committee chairs, and the Calls for Proposals and for Hosts. Modifications in progress and upcoming include a policy on hybridity, changes to our submission system’s keywords and review process, expanding the code of conduct, expanding our language policy, and leveraging data collection to support equity, diversity, and inclusion. Continue reading here to learn more.

We have developed a proposal for a new set of evaluation criteria and the corresponding review questions, as well as for a new way of designing the ConfTool review form. Key changes include more closely connecting the decision on numerical scores and textual comments, for each review question, and a new evaluation criterion that takes a submission’s contribution to the diversity of the programme into account. Please submit your feedback via online survey by July 31, 2023. We thank you in advance for your input.
ADHO Deputy Treasurer, Incoming

The Treasurer is the financial manager for both ADHO and the ADHO Foundation (ADHO’s legal entity, based in the Netherlands), and is a member of the Executive Board. The Treasurer keeps track of and reports on the budget and advises the Executive and Constituent Organization Boards about financial decisions. The Deputy Treasurer advises and assists the Treasurer as needed, and may act on behalf of the Treasurer when they are unavailable. The Treasurer and Deputy Treasurer manage the financial assets of ADHO. This position has a three-year term with the first year as Incoming Deputy Treasurer, the second year as Deputy Treasurer, and the final year as Treasurer.

Responsibilities (in collaboration with the ADHO Treasurer and Deputy Treasurer):

Reporting regularly on the ADHO budget to the EB, the COB, and governmental institutions as required;

Managing ADHO finances and monitoring ADHO accounts and transactions and keeping accounting software (Quickbooks) up to date;

Conducting analysis and research (e.g., comparing planned and actual budget figures; preparing annual budgets in consultation with the EB; etc.);

Engaging in regular EB meetings and communicating both synchronously and asynchronously (presence at the annual meeting is desirable but not essential);

Updating treasurer’s handbook as required.

Conference Coordinating Committee (CCC) Incoming Chair-Elect

One of ADHO’s most visible activities is its annual international conference, usually held in July or August in venues around the world.

The Conference Coordinating Committee (CCC) is responsible for developing, improving and maintaining the ADHO Conference Protocol and accompanying guidelines, and coordinating the annual conference. The CCC is overseen by a Chair, a Chair-Elect and an Incoming Chair-Elect, all appointed by the COB. This position has a three-year term with the first year as Incoming Chair-Elect, the second year as Chair-Elect, and the final year as Chair.

The role of Incoming Chair-Elect would be appropriate for people somewhat new to the ADHO community who are willing to serve and have the benefit of two years experience before becoming Chair. Therefore, no previous experience attending an ADHO conference is necessary, and we encourage anyone who is interested and willing to learn during a three year commitment.

Responsibilities (in collaboration with the Chair and Chair-Elect):

Maintaining the Conference Protocols and ensuring that they are followed by the Local Organizers (LOs), Program Committee (PC), and others involved in the annual Digital Humanities Conference;

Issuing the call for bids for the ADHO international conference, providing detailed information to those who are interested in bidding for the conference, providing feedback to initial bids; determining whether revised bids should be passed on to the COB and the EB, and making recommendations to the COB and EB about revised bids;

Maintaining an annually updated list of the pool of reviewers for the conference;

Working in consultation with the PC to determine the form of the proposal review process (e.g., double-anonymous, reviewer-anonymous, or open);

Maintaining the draft-model call for proposals from which the PCs draft each year’s individual CFP, and ensuring email lists are established for each year’s PC and that PC members are promptly subscribed to it;

Reviewing requests for additional languages to be added for a particular conference and innovations to the conference format;

Reviewing requests for in-name sponsorship of digital humanities conferences, and approving presentations by sponsors together with the PC;

Maintaining the draft-model report of the conference, receiving preliminary and final reports from LOs and PC chairs, and conveying them to the COB and EB for review;

Conducting a brief survey of conference participants after its conclusion.

Multi-Lingualism & Multi-Culturalism (MLMC) Committee Chair

The MLMC Chair steers the work of the Committee and advises the COB and the EB in their decision-making. The COB appoints the MLMC Chair for a term of three years, and the incumbent reports to the EB.

The areas in which policies on Multilingualism and Multiculturalism have an impact include:

The websites and public communications of ADHO and its COs;

The conferences of ADHO and its COs, including overseeing translations of the annual conference call for papers;

The journals and other publications of ADHO and its COs;

To reflect the multilingual and multicultural wealth of the community;

To take the different academic cultures and norms into account;

To ensure proposals are reviewed by culture- and language-sensitive reviewers.

Responsibilities:

Consulting with the EB on important strategic, operational, and management issues relating to the planning and operation of the awards processes;

Regularly reporting on Awards Committee activities to the EB;

Identifying and supporting new ways to encourage multilingual representation and engagement across ADHO initiatives.

News from the Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations

Welcome to ADHO’s newsletter! In this periodic email, we share recent ADHO activities as well as those of our constituent organizations, SIGs, journals, and more. Know someone who would like to receive our newsletter? Encourage them to sign up here.

New ADHO Officers and Committee Chairs

One of the true constants in the ADHO world is change; another is our need, as an all-volunteer organization, for dedicated colleagues to serve in many different leadership and service roles. We’ve been tremendously fortunate in our people, and it’s a pleasure to introduce several people who’ve joined our Executive and Constituent Organisations Boards over the past several months, and of course to thank those whose terms have ended.

Farewells: We would like to thank Chao-Lin Liu, COB representative for TADH, and Anna Sofia Lippolis, Communications Fellow, for all their contributions to ADHO!

Welcomes: Megan Senseny has been working with us since mid-2022 as Executive Board Secretary; Melanie Conroy has joined as Deputy Treasurer; Richard Tzong-Han Tsai joins as the new TADH COB representative and president of TADH; Alexandra Nuñez and Isabel Rentería are our Communications Fellows for 2023; and Erdal Ayan, former Communications Fellow, is now Deputy Communications Officer. Welcome to you all!

New Protocols for Governance, Admissions

We are pleased to inform you that ADHO now has new governance and admissions protocols. The Governance protocol describes ADHO’s structure and functions. The Admissions protocol establishes the procedure for the admission of new organizations to the Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations. As part of the Admissions protocol, we are revitalizing our Affiliated Organizations (AO) program. Learn more about Constituent and Affiliated Organization membership.

The update of these documents was required by the major change in governance of ADHO, initiated several years ago. These structural changes (see details on governance here) have an impact on the admission of new Constituent Organizations (COs).

In Honour of International Women’s Day

We’re still collecting suggestions, so please reply to our tweet to share a project, or you can email us at communications@adho.org.

ACH 2023 will host its annual conference virtually on June 29-July 1, 2023. The conference will feature a range of sessions, including individual papers and lightning talks, panels and roundtables, installations and performances, and a poster session. ACH 2023 recognizes that digital humanities scholarship is inextricably sociopolitical. Therefore, we have chosen to forgo a theme to emphasize the inherent sociopolitical nature of our work, with particular emphasis on social justice in multiple contexts: anti-racist work, Indigenous studies, cultural and critical ethnic studies, intersectional feminism, postcolonial and decolonial studies, disability studies, and queer studies. The keynote roundtable will feature a conversation about accessibility and digital scholarship. Registration information will be posted soon on the conference website. Questions can be directed to the conference planning committee at conference@ach.org.

JADH is seeking proposals for JADH2023, “Possibilities for Data-Driven Humanities,” held virtually by the National Institute of Japanese Literature on September 20-22, 2023, around 9am to 6pm in Japanese standard time. The recent global spread of open science has led to data-driven science, and expectations are also growing for the humanities. Data-driven research in the humanities is still in its infancy, and in many fields, it is rather necessary to construct data for this purpose. Therefore, this conference welcomes a wide range of presentations not only on methods and results of data-driven research but also on data construction in anticipation of such research. Moreover, research topics related to the world's diverse practices in digital humanities are welcome, as in previous years. The call for papers is now open. Please submit your paper here by May 7, 2023 (11:59 pm, HAST). Presenters will be notified of acceptance of their paper on May 29, 2023.

Welcome to ADHO’s first newsletter!
President’s Message

by Susan Brown

I’m honoured to be writing this as the new president of ADHO’s Constituent Organisations Board, and inspired to be following in the footsteps of Isabel Galina, Elisabeth Burr, and Matt Gold in this role.

I feel extremely fortunate about the timing. This is the year when ADHO will finish the massive governance overhaul that has been underway since 2013. It’s taken almost a decade to effect the major transformation in the structure of ADHO which aimed, in the words of Karina van Dalem-Oskam, “to change the ADHO organization into an open, friendly, and efficient community that can continue to work on its mission to further Digital Humanities with more and more new organizations all over the world.” ADHO began in 2005 with just two organizations. It is now eleven, with more organizations from around the world seeking to join.

Emails have also been sent out to our reviewer pool.
ADHO Activities

What we’ve been working on lately.

Farewells: We’re so grateful for the time, energy, and careful thought put into ADHO activities by Isabel Galina Russell (outgoing COB President), Patricia Murrieta-Flores (EB Secretary), Scott Weingart (Deputy Treasurer), and Micki Kaufmann (Awards Committee Chair). We wish them all the best and are so pleased to continue our work with Isabel, who remains RedHD’s COB representative. We’re also thankful for the wisdom brought to the COB by Evelyn Gius (DHd), Kathleen Fitzpatrick (ACH), Nirmala Menon (centerNet), and Paul Millar (aaDH).

Welcomes: In late spring 2022, Megan Senseney joined us as our new EB Secretary, and we’re also pleased to welcome Melanie Conroy as our new Deputy Treasurer. Erdal Ayan will be transitioning from Communications Fellow to Deputy Communications Officer in January, and Anne Ladyem McDivitt is joining as the new Chair of our Awards Committee. We also have some new and returning faces: Christof Schöch returns as DHd COB representative and COB President-Elect, and Rachel Hendery (aaDH), Nadezhda Povroznik (centerNet), and Quinn Dombrowski (ACH) join the COB. We also are pleased to welcome a liaison between the COBw/EB and our Intersectional Inclusion Task Force (IITF), Dibyadyuti Roy.

For nearly a year, we have been hard at work revising our Admissions and Governance Protocols. These are some of the last remaining tasks that will complete our governance transition begun in 2019. These will be posted on the ADHO website in the coming months.

Inclusion, Equity, and Diversity:

This past spring, volunteers from across the DH community formed ADHO’s Intersectional Inclusion Taskforce (IITF). Learn more about the IITF’s members and the group’s goals.

As part of our ongoing efforts to address structural inequities, we have published an Inclusion Statement, which describes ADHO’s overarching goals when it comes to supporting a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive digital humanities community.

This past month we launched a new site for the Blackwell Companions to Digital Humanities, digital anthologies that ADHO hosts with permission of Blackwell Publishing. Learn more.

In the last few months, ADHO’s Communications Team developed a podcast series for ADHO, CoreDH, in which they interview members of ADHO’s Constituent Organizations (COs). Each interview focuses on one CO and the work it’s doing, along with the research interests of CO representatives. Check out the first three episodes featuring DHd, ACH, and DHASA.

ADHO has a new website! Built in WordPress, it features much of the same content from the previous website with some important updates and is designed with accessibility and usability as guiding principles. Perhaps most significantly, the site will be supporting multilingual content. Look for the launch of pilot French and Spanish translations in late 2022.

Each year, ADHO selects two students and/or early career scholars to join us as Communications Fellows. We’ll be announcing a 2023 call for applications in a few weeks, so please watch for this news and be sure to share with anyone who may be interested!
